“Performative, quotational, playful, animated, collage-istic, semi-narrative, hyper-textual, carnivalesque, conceptual, pop, ironic, unhinged: there are countless adjectives we could use to describe Andrea Granchi’s cinema, yet none of them would enough to describe it in all its complexity” (Bruno Di Marino).
Andrea Granchi produced highly original, ironic and irreverent films almost always shot in Super8. These films were astonishing for the period due to their theoretical and practical approach, which transcends time.
This year, the section dedicated to the recovery and re-enactment of independent Italian cinema from the 1960s and 1970s, Art & Experimental Film, is presenting a retrospective dedicated to Granchi, inspired by his own words in the introduction to the impressive volume he left us as a precious guide to his artistic career (L’immagine in movimento. Film e opere, 1966-2019), in which the artist expresses the hope that his research, works, and documents, i.e., his archive, “might one day become a reference point for the younger generations who will animate the cultural climate of our future with renewed spirit and methods, while remaining attentive to memory.”
Starting from these words, through the viewing of three restored films (Cosa succede in periferia?, 1971; Il giovane rottame, 1972, and Morte del movimento, 1974) and the brilliant and entertaining stories collected in a video interview in 2022, we will embark on a brief but intense journey with Andrea Granchi: the dream of a future through the archive.
