The archive that isn’t there. The Liberation of Mozambique

In the next edition of Archivio Aperto, the section of the festival entitled L’archivio che non c’è (The Archive That Isn’t There) – which aims to highlight archives that are experiencing difficulties – will be dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the liberation of Mozambique.

Through the screening of previously unseen public and private films, we will explore the colonial images and imagery linked to Portugal’s past in Africa, which is still the subject of a controversial archive currently under construction.

Among the films presented are the 16mm footage shot by Franco Cigarini in 1972, showing Samora Machel—then leader of FRELIMO (Frente de Libertação de Moçambique)—at the movement’s headquarters in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Samora Machel became the first president of Mozambique on June 25, 1975, the day of the declaration of independence from Portugal.
