Sustainability tips!
Help Archivio Aperto be a sustainable festival.
How? Here are some step-by-step suggestions. You can learn about some of the actions we have been implementing for some time in favor of environmental sustainability.
Sustainable mobility
All festival locations are very close to each other. We have designed the program of events so that the public has time to reach the various locations on foot or by bicycle. Thanks to our partnership with RideMovi, you will always find bicycles available at the festival venues! Don’t use your car (you can rest your legs in the theater).
On the page Entrances & Location – but also by clicking HERE – you will also find a QR code with a digital map and the festival locations to help you find your way around the streets of Bologna, as well as tips on how to reach us by public transport!
Thanks to the collaboration of Bologna Welcome, our guests will have the opportunity to discover Bologna with a map in hand, exploring it comfortably on foot.
Merchandising
This is our favorite part: our merch stand has just a few products, but they’ve been carefully selected. The Archivio Aperto T-shirt is made from 100% Belcoro cotton yarn, as is the tote bag. Both were made by Atelier Tatanka, visual arts, graphic design, and risograph printing studio based in Bologna. The studio works on editorial, artistic, and educational projects, with a particular focus on printed material, participatory processes, and self-production. You will also notice Atelier Tatanka’s involvement in another project: the flipbook created in collaboration with and promoted by Libreria Trame of Bologna on the occasion of its 10th anniversary!
The cases, on the other hand, were made from recycled TNT material from the previous edition of Archivio Aperto,They were designed and created by Elitra, a project featuring handmade creations by Arianna Calzà and Elisa Postai, founded in the province of Trento.
Printed materials…the less paper, the better!
This year, we have decided to reduce the amount of printed material: the festival catalog is available to the public free of charge in digital format only. You will find the program in print—as well as in digital format!—designed to be kept as a keepsake with a beautiful frame.
The paper used complies with FSC/PEFC standards. The program is also printed by Tipografia Negri (Bologna), which has been investing in sustainability for years. The company uses renewable energy thanks to a photovoltaic system installed on the roof of the factory: 1,000 square meters of panels capable of powering the machinery with clean energy.
Gadget
What will festival guests find in their tote bags? A water bottle provided by Gruppo Hera, sponsor of the festival, along with a curated selection of merchandise from past editions of Archivio Aperto. Both guests and accredited visitors will receive their own pass to enjoy the festival in peace: the lanyards are neutral and not linked to the current edition, so they can be reused, while the badge is made of FSC/PEFC certified paper.
Installations
Regular festival-goers will have recognized our wooden totems: hand-built structures that we use year after year and that adapt to various locations. The only thing we renew are the TNT tarpaulins. The furniture in the festival center was donated by Pronto Soccorso Sociale Opera di Padre Marella: once the festival is over, we will return the tables, chairs, and accessories to “Opera Marella,” ready to start a new cycle of reuse.
Waste management
In the areas managed by the festival, you will find recycling centers: please pay attention to where you throw your trash. Please note: plates, saucers, glasses, and forks are made of paper or recycled materials. We are committed to being as plastic-free as possible, and your support will be essential. Within the festival team, we have appointed a manager who is responsible for ensuring that they are disposed of correctly.
Reception
We did our best to accommodate our guests in the city center: it was very difficult with the huge influx of tourists, but we tried. And we succeeded! Do you know how many steps the directors have to take to reach the nearest movie theater? About 20.
Food sustainability. Local products and less waste
The buffets for this edition of the festival, as well as meals for staff and volunteers, are provided by Zem Vegan Bistrot and their 100% plant-based, organic, and locally sourced cuisine. Wine is provided by Il Granaro, a participatory winemaking project in the hills of Bologna.
Please do not buy plastic water bottles: at the Festival Center, you will find the Sorgente Urbana offered by Gruppo Hera. You can bring your own water bottle or ask for one provided free of charge by Gruppo Hera: we also use them for round tables and talks.
Environmental culture and awareness
Talking about archive reuse means reflecting on the ecology of images, promoting and raising awareness of sustainable artistic practice. For three years, the festival has also offered the section La Natura dell’archivio (The Nature of the Archive), a space for reflection on the connections between the botanical and animal worlds, archives, and memory, through free meetings and art installations. This year, the section will host artist Rose Lowder, one of the pioneers of botanical and sustainable cinema.
We are committed to sharing these actions with the festival audience and our guests through social media channels, information available at the desk, a dedicated newsletter, and a video excerpt to be screened during the screenings. The festival staff and volunteers will also be involved in this awareness-raising process by sharing the environmental policy guidelines adopted by Archivio Aperto and the protocols currently in force in the Italian and European festival system.
