Synopsis

A room, a Virgin Mary, toothpaste ads, bikinis, the Ecuador-Peru war, Venezuelan soap operas, late-night news, the devil and the sun—a child discovers cinema. A schizophrenic video collage, like Ecuadorian identity or the turn of the century. A mother and her son use the same video tapes to record themselves in parallel timelines, overlapping different impressions of the world. Images from the ’90s reveal a world still failing to solve the same problems.

Biography

Ecuadorian non-fiction filmmaker and editor. His film-collages combine archival footage and contemporary materials to explore history, identity, and the constant tension between humans and nature. His films have been screened at festivals such as IFFR Rotterdam, Sheffield DocFest, Uppsala, MIDBO, and Ultra Cinema.

Statement

My first images were filmed in 2006, recorded over my mother’s old news tapes from between 1990 and 1997. Autorretrato a los 13 was born from this collage of ways of looking at the world. Between public and private, professional and amateur. Watching and rewatching, dozens of times, the news footage from the ’90s, I realized we’re still trapped by the same questions. What to do with so many images, what to do with so many wars? The images from 30 years ago are still relevant, and we are still unable to provide answers.

— Oscar X. Illingworth

Archival materials

Ecuadorian TV news programmes from the Ecuavisa, Teleamazonas and Si TV channels between 1990 and 1996, and a Mini DV personal archive from 2006.
