OLTREMARE. Sguardi amatoriali sull’Africa mediterranea
(82′)
Archives materials from 1929 to 1982.
North Africa as filmed in the colonial and postcolonial eras by the amateur cameras of travellers, settlers, tourists, artists and journalists. We journey through time, from the 1920s to the 1980s, and across space, from Morocco to Algeria, Tunisia, Libya and finally Egypt. These countries lie between sea and desert, between the Mediterranean and the Sahara. Coming from Italy, these outside perspectives represent an attempt at appropriation—and, at times, at understanding and empathy.
A selection of amateur films from the Fondazione Home Movies, curated by Michele Manzolini and Paolo Simoni.
Live score by Davide Bristot, Federico Fondelli, Laura Mocerino, Leda Di Piro, Luca Lovisetto and Riccardo Martorana.
Musical supervision by Laura Agnusdei and Massimo Carozzi.
Part of Memoryscores, a project by Fondazione Home Movies – National Archive of Amateur Film and Articolture, supported by the Italian Ministry of Culture (MiC) and SIAE as part of the “Per Chi Crea” programme. In collaboration with the Union of the Municipalities of the Bolognese Apennines, the Municipality of Grizzana Morandi, and Vivicampolo.
Technical partnership: Palens – Community Cooperative.
