Mix

I first learned almost by accident, during a class at the Polish National Film School in Lodz, about the students who had come there from the Global South during the Cold War. My own sense of estrangement made me immediately attentive to their presence. I have always needed a material contact with history — with the traces left inside the place where I happen to live and work — in order for it to become fully real to me. At first, I was fascinated by a very physical question: what happens to a body when it enters another linguistic family? How does it move, speak, look and become visible differently inside a language, a culture and a cinematic institution that are not its own? The archival films became less a historical record for me than a field in which these transformations could still be felt.
