Les Tournesols was shot in a few adjacent sunflower fields near Bédarrides. The focus is adjusted gradually, frame by frame, following a series of patterns and filming individual plants situated in different parts of the field. The many configurations placed on separate film frames appear on screen at the same time as a result of the projection. In this way, the sunflowers, filmed one by one at different focal lengths, merge during the screening, creating a single space-time image. Les Tournesols colorés is some kind of variation of Les Tournesols, to which pastel coloring has been added, lending further modulation to the film’s motion. The two versions are presented one after the other, although they were initially conceived to be shown separately.
