Two women exchange film letters that cross past and present. Heidrun, a Viennese woman seen through archival footage, and Sara, a Colombian migrant working at the Austrian Film Museum, live in Vienna at different times. Interweaving amateur archival films with present-day fiction shot on 16mm, the film explores migration, uprootedness and racism while questioning what deserves to be archived and what does not.

Biography
Filmmaker and photographer born and based in Bogotá, Colombia. Her practice encompasses various forms of documentary such as essay film, video diary and epistolary film. Currently, Sara is interested in assembling archival footage with fictional elements, in order to construct a new discourse and meaning that brings her closer to the original material. Her films have been screened at film festivals such as Doclisboa, Warsaw International Film Festival, Kasseler Dokfest, Diagonale, FICCI and Midbo.
Statement
The archival material used in Winter Blumen Garten comes from my internship at the Amateur Film Department of the Austrian Film Museum. The department’s director, Stefanie Zingl, helped me discover these films, made by women in Vienna between the 1960s and the 1990s.
Some of the filmmakers are still alive, and we had the opportunity to meet and interview them. The films made by each filmmaker were donated to the Austrian Film Museum, where they were catalogued, classified, digitized, restored, and ultimately preserved in the archive. This work was carried out in the context of Reel Adventures, a research project led by Stefanie Zingl that digitizes and makes available online more than 200 film titles documenting the history of Vienna.
