Archivio Aperto 16th edition

Archive Lovers

Archive Lovers

Ffor its second consecutive year, Archivio Aperto 2023 proposes Archive Lovers, a series of programs addressed to those who wish to learn about or explore archival practices related to private, amateur, and experimental cinema.

Aimed at students, researchers, young filmmakers, and moving image curators, Archive Lovers was conceived as an opportunity to meet and exchange ideas, experiences, and visions about the use of archival images today and the role they will play in the future.

Similarly to last year, Archive Lovers features two different participation categories.

Young Jury

Archivio Aperto 2023 opens its call for applications dedicated to the Young Jury! 15 young people from all over Italy will have the task of selecting the best work in the official competition from more than 15 films, many of them Italian premieres, and the chance to meet international filmmakers and experts.

If you are between 18 and 26 years old and passionate about film heritage utilization, culture, and visual languages, creative and research documentaries, history, and anthropology, a five-day immersion in contemporary cinema and its endless possibilities awaits you.

All the jurors will be provided with accreditation to attend all Archivio Aperto events free of charge. For those living outside the province of Bologna, Archivio Aperto will provide hospitality for all the nights of the festival in an affiliated accommodation.

Archive Care / Curatorial practices for small-format film archives

The presence of archival and heritage images in spaces dedicated to contemporary art and media is increasing: from exhibitions, museums, films, and educational contexts to the multiple possibilities of online fruition, the visual memories of the past are reclaiming their space, often becoming the starting point for a new reading of the present and an encounter between the individual, the collective, and history.

Archive CARE is therefore configured as a specific path within the Archivio Aperto festival: a series of meetings and networking moments with researchers, curators, autors, producers, and programmers dedicated to curatorial practices of private, amateur, and artist’s archives: from film festivals to audiovisual productions, including the sphere of contemporary art.

The program will culminate with a day entirely dedicated to professional development and educational training (Monday, October 30), in which all participants will have the opportunity to present their own authorial or curatorial concept – documentary, video essay, installation, but also articles, essays, reviews – related to the promotion, preservation or dissemination of audiovisual heritage, with particular attention to the sphere of family, amateur, artist and experimental films without any thematic, geographic or target audience limitation.

How to participate

Each applicant should send their proposal with an abstract (max 200 words) and CV to homemovies.archivioaperto@gmail.com.

For those living outside the province of Bologna, Archivio Aperto will provide hospitality for all the nights of the festival in an affiliated accommodation. Accreditation will be provided to attend all Archivio Aperto events free of charge. Meetings and workshops will be held in Italian or English, depending on the origin of the guest speaker.

Archive Care will have a maximum of 10 participants.

All selected candidates will receive confirmation by September 20, 2023.
